Why this map looks different

Most web maps use Mercator, which inflates countries near the poles. Greenland looks similar in size to Africa there, though Africa is about 14 times larger. Equal Earth is an equal-area projection: landmasses keep their true relative sizes, with more familiar continent shapes than Gall–Peters.

The atlas redraws Natural Earth 1:50 million vectors in Equal Earth so countries, rivers, lakes, and cities stay interactive as you pan and zoom. The wall maps are the original Patterson and BMZ sheets, zoomable like a photograph.
